Level of Structural Organisation and Body Systems

The human body is a highly organized structure composed of different levels of organization, beginning with cells and progressing to tissues, organs, organ systems, and finally the complete organism. Each level performs specific functions, and all levels work together to maintain life. The body is organized into several systems, each carrying out specialized functions essential for survival and well-being.

Major Body Systems

1. Skeletal System

The skeletal system forms the framework of the body and consists of bones, cartilage, ligaments, and joints. It provides support and shape to the body, protects delicate internal organs, and serves as the attachment site for muscles. The skull protects the brain, the rib cage protects the heart and lungs, and the vertebral column safeguards the spinal cord. Bones also store minerals such as calcium and phosphorus and participate in blood cell formation.

2. Muscular System

The muscular system consists of muscles and tendons attached to bones. It enables voluntary and involuntary movements of the body. Muscles help maintain posture, generate heat, and give the body its characteristic shape. Skeletal muscles allow movement of limbs, while smooth and cardiac muscles control the movement of internal organs and the heart.

3. Nervous System

The nervous system is responsible for controlling and coordinating all body activities. It includes the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. This system receives information from the environment through sensory organs, processes the information, and initiates appropriate responses. It allows individuals to perceive, think, learn, remember, and react to changes in their surroundings.

4. Circulatory System

The circulatory or cardiovascular system transports blood throughout the body. It consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood. This system supplies oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and other essential substances to body tissues while removing carbon dioxide and metabolic waste products. It plays a vital role in maintaining body temperature and internal balance.

5. Respiratory System

The respiratory system is responsible for the exchange of gases between the body and the external environment. It consists of the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. Oxygen from the atmosphere enters the lungs and is transported to body cells, while carbon dioxide produced during cellular metabolism is expelled from the body.

6. Digestive System

The digestive system is concerned with the ingestion, digestion, absorption, and elimination of food. It includes the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, and gall bladder. Digestion breaks down complex food substances into simpler forms that can be absorbed and utilized by the body for energy, growth, and repair.

7. Excretory System

The excretory system removes waste products generated by metabolic activities. The kidneys are the primary organs of excretion and eliminate waste through urine. Other organs such as the lungs, skin, and large intestine also assist in removing carbon dioxide, excess salts, water, and undigested materials from the body.

8. Endocrine System

The endocrine system consists of glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream. These hormones regulate growth, metabolism, reproduction, fluid balance, and various other body functions. Major endocrine glands include the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pancreas, and gonads.

9. Reproductive System

The reproductive system is responsible for producing offspring and ensuring the continuation of the species. It consists of specialized organs that produce reproductive cells (gametes) and hormones. The male reproductive system produces sperm, while the female reproductive system produces ova and provides an environment for fetal development.

All these body systems function together in an integrated and coordinated manner. The proper functioning of one system often depends on the activities of other systems, ensuring the maintenance of health, growth, and survival.

Main Divisions of the Human Body

The human body is built around a bony framework called the skeleton and is divided into three major regions:

(a) Head and Neck

This region contains the brain, sensory organs, and structures responsible for communication and feeding.

(b) Trunk

The trunk forms the central part of the body and is further divided into:

  • Thorax (Chest)
  • Abdomen
  • Pelvis

It contains most of the body’s major organs.

(c) Limbs

The limbs are responsible for movement and manipulation of objects.

  • Upper Limbs: Arms, forearms, wrists, and hands.
  • Lower Limbs: Thighs, legs, ankles, and feet.

Body Cavities

For easier study and description, the human body is divided into four major cavities.

1. Cranial Cavity

The cranial cavity is enclosed by the bones of the skull and contains the brain. It protects the brain from injury and provides a stable environment for the central nervous system.

2. Thoracic Cavity

The thoracic cavity, or chest cavity, is enclosed by the ribs, sternum, vertebral column, and associated muscles. It contains:

  • Heart
  • Lungs
  • Trachea
  • Bronchi
  • Oesophagus
  • Major blood vessels such as the aorta and vena cava

3. Abdominal Cavity

The abdominal cavity is located below the thoracic cavity and above the pelvic cavity. It contains:

  • Stomach
  • Small intestine
  • Most of the large intestine
  • Liver
  • Gall bladder
  • Pancreas
  • Spleen
  • Kidneys
  • Adrenal glands
  • Upper part of the uterus (in females)

The upper boundary is formed by the diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle essential for breathing.

4. Pelvic Cavity

The pelvic cavity is situated below the abdominal cavity and is enclosed by the pelvic bones. It contains:

  • Urinary bladder
  • Lower part of the large intestine
  • Portions of the small intestine
  • Urethra
  • Reproductive organs

Anatomical Terminology

To accurately describe the location and relationships of body structures, anatomists use standard anatomical terms.

Anatomical Position

The anatomical position is the standard reference position in which a person stands upright with:

  • Head facing forward
  • Arms at the sides
  • Palms facing forward
  • Feet together and directed forward

Median Plane

The median plane divides the body into equal right and left halves.

  • Medial: Toward the midline of the body.
  • Lateral: Away from the midline.

Proximal and Distal

These terms describe positions on the limbs.

  • Proximal: Closer to the point of attachment.
  • Distal: Farther from the point of attachment.

Anterior (Ventral)

Refers to structures located toward the front of the body.

Posterior (Dorsal)

Refers to structures located toward the back of the body.

Superior

Indicates a structure located nearer to the head or upper part of the body.

Inferior

Indicates a structure located farther from the head or toward the lower part of the body.

Important Anatomical Terms

Border: A ridge of bone separating two surfaces.

Spine (Spinous Process or Crest): A prominent bony projection, especially in vertebrae.

Tubercle: A small rough projection on a bone serving as an attachment point for muscles or ligaments.

Fossa: A shallow depression or hollow in a bone.

Foramen: An opening or hole in a bone through which nerves or blood vessels pass.

Sinus: An air-filled cavity within a bone.

Meatus: A tube-like passage or canal within a bone.

Articulation (Joint): The junction between two or more bones.

Suture: An immovable joint found between skull bones.

Articulating Surface: The portion of a bone that forms part of a joint.

Facet: A small, smooth, flat articulating surface.

Condyle: A rounded projection at the end of a bone that participates in joint formation.

Septum: A partition dividing two cavities or spaces.

Fissure (Cleft): A narrow slit or groove between structures.
